US bill promotes Biofuels

June 4th, 2008 by schwanac in Biology · Chemistry · No Comments

The U.S. recently passed a bill that cut the subsidizing on BioDiesel. This created a victory for the other companies that are developing second generation biofuels. This bill also guarantied $320 million in loans for manufactures.

This opens up more doors so that we can lower our dependence on oil. The more we preserve these very limited oil supplies the better it will be for us in the future.

Antibacterial wipes can still spread bacteria

June 3rd, 2008 by rauschrs in Biology · No Comments

So this is for all those germaphobic people that carry Purell hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, and Lysol disinfectent spray in their purse.

Researchers say that our favorite handy clean wipes can spread bacteria after first use. They are best used for hard surfaces used in hospitals and other facilities. Although the antibacterial wipes can remove most bacteria from the surfaces, they cannot kill the bacteria they remove. This can transfer bacteria from surface to surface if used more than once on various surfaces.

Kids drinking more sugary drinks and juice

June 2nd, 2008 by murillsn in Chemistry · 2 Comments

It is said that in the U.S. today most kids are taking in calories from sugary drinks and juices. Most people give their children 100% fruit juices to keep them slim and to help them maintain a healthy diet. But what they do not know is that they are still at risk to be overweight just by drinking these juices. These juices are not substitutes for fruits and can affect you in a harmful way. Juices do help you with some nutrients you need but it does not help you keep weight down or off and sugary drinks do not help you one bit with any of these.

This article shocked me because I thought that juices were always good for you. I especially assumed that when the carton said 100% Fruit Juice that it was healthier then any other sugary drink or juice. But at least we know the truth now. But I don’t know if that is a good thing because whenever I buy juice now I am going to be paranoid and so will you.

But yeah now some words of wisdom from Stephanie….Be aware of what you put in your mouth..and drink..and allow to go down your THROAT!!!! Because what we just read proved that labels are LIES!!! And manufactures are LIARS!!!! And will burn the fiery pits of Satan if they do not ask for forgiveness and stop living in their SIN..and lies!!!!

Drug May Cut Tremors Associated With Parkinson’s

June 2nd, 2008 by vergarja in Uncategorized · No Comments

There is a new drug out there that is capable of helping people with Parkinson’s disease out. It battles the tics and tremors they have when their medications stops working. This drug is called istradfeylline. Istradfeylline helps nerve and brain signals avoid the damaged dopamine system in the brain that leads to Parkinson’s. There was a study made of 395 people with Parkinson’s that took istradfeylline while on levodopa, a drug for Parkinson’s, had 24 percent off time. Which means that they hardly experienced the tremors as they used to.

This article that I have found is pretty extraordinary if you ask me! It amazes me everyday that there are new things discovered everyday. This drug that is able to help people that suffer from Parkinson’s disease out after their prescribed medication wears off. The study that was taken proves that istradfeylline is a successful add-on therapy to patients. This is truly amazing!

Blind People See?

June 2nd, 2008 by campbejt in Chemistry · 3 Comments

About 30 million people in the world are blind as a result of various retinal diseases. The EPI-RET project has sought for a technical solution for 12 years to help these patients. Experts from many different fields of science chipped in. Their hard work and effort has brought about a visual prosthetic device for people who have lost their sight due to retinal diseases.

In a clinical study of 6 different patients, the team was able to prove that patients were able to perceive visual images. This is an enormous step for the blind. Although they may not be able to see as well as we do, it is certainly getting closer to it. EPI-RET plans on marketing the vision prosthesis in about 3 years after more studies are completed. Caffeine the best of it the worst of it.

June 2nd, 2008 by stix25 in Biology · Chemistry · Other Science · Physics · 2 Comments

Coffee. Cola. Tea.  What do all of these drinks have in common?  They all contain caffeine.  Caffeine is a chemical filled with tons of sugar particles.  Many adults have coffee in the morning to help them wake up.  Scientist have proven that caffeine helps people react quicker and even run longer.  Scientist also found out that caffeinated coffee and tea can help protect the heart, brain, and other organs from disease.  On the other hand caffeinated drinks can also be the worst for you.  A 2003 survey of more than 200 students in grades 7-9 found that kids who drank a 16-ounce bottle of cola slept less, woke up more often, and felt more tired the next day than kids who drank less caffeine. This is very bad for you because sleeping is an important part of staying healthy.  Caffeine also raises blood pressure and makes you feel more stressed out.

Check out my cool article about caffeine

This article has changed my views on caffeinated drinks.  I didn’t think that so much would affect my body just by drinking a Pepsi or a Coke.  Even coffee in the morning is bad for you, it may have its positives about it but in my opinion I think all caffeinated drinks are bad.

A spokesperson for NASA has just released a report that global warming studies were falsified and according to the report “marginalized and mischaracterized” reports sent to agencies and the administration.  The Inspector General called it “inappropriate political interference” by the press office and also called the report untrue and that no top managment officials were involved.

The report also claimed that NASA downgraded press releases and denied access to scientists.  NASA has denied all claims and stated that the report was false and the problems that it mentioned were long fixed.  For the full story click here.

Sunshine Superpower

June 1st, 2008 by ytingdj in Chemistry · 1 Comment

The Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is trying to create an invention that would carry out the reverse of combustion, by using solar energy to chemically re-energize carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into carbon monoxide. The prototype, which is called Counter Rotating Ring Receiver Reactor Recuperator, was designed to break a carbon-oxygen bond in the carbon dioxide to form carbon monoxide and oxygen. This invention was designed to help recycle carbon dioxide into fuels and will result in fossil fuels being used at least twice. By doing this, less carbon dioxide will be put into the atmosphere and the amount of fossil fuels that are pulled out of the ground will be reduced.
By creating this device, not only do I believe our atmosphere would be cleaner, but this invention would also help to provide more fuel for our vehicles.
